The Tesco Future Farmer Foundation Experience

James Yeomans is one of our young but highly talented farmers. He currently works as a Farmer Manager at Poplars Farm, and you can learn more about him here.

James was already an exemplary young farmer, having graduated as top student from Harper Adams University with a 1st class honours degree in Agriculture. He has proved impressive at Grasslands and has swiftly moved through the company. However, James was keen to push himself further and so enrolled on the Tesco Future Farmer Foundation.

The Tesco Future Farmer Foundation supports young farmers by teaching them crucial business and management skills. Developed in consultation with young farmers, the programme has been specifically tailored to areas they wish to develop, in order to further advance their careers.  Having taken the feedback on board, the scheme focuses heavily on business skills and the various elements of the supply chain. Insight is provided by industry experts on topics as varied as staff management and diversification.

One of the major benefits of the scheme is the opportunity to learn from other people industry, trade ideas and begin to build a network. James has been fortunate to learn not only from experts in banking, law and accountancy, but also his fellow farmers. He has taken practices observed at their farms and successfully implemented them into his own work. James continues to communicate the group, asking and offering advice when needed. These will provide a solid foundation as he moves forward in his career.

Crucially, the programme is free. Tesco sponsor the whole scheme, ensuring that it is truly open and accessible to all interested young farmers, between the ages of 20 and 35. They are committed to investing in the future of British farming and its young people.
